The scoop on Laser Hair Removal
Traditional hair removal methods such as waxing, shaving and plucking can be time consuming, painful and must be repeated over and over which can be frustrating…and exhausting. Laser hair removal is the process of hair removal by means of exposure to pulses of laser light that destroy the hair follicles. Typical treatment areas include face, arms, armpits, back, bikini area, and legs.
Our hair growth cycle has four phases. The first is called the Anagen Phase. This is the phase in which hairs grow. The second is called the Catagen Phase, where hair follicles shrink and detach. The third is called the Telogen Phase which is considered resting/dormant. The fourth and final phase is the Exogen Phase where the hairs are released and fall out. Laser hair removal works best if the hair is in the active growth cycle – the Anagen Phase.
The client meets with a licensed practitioner during a consultation and then numbing cream is applied before the treatment. The client rests on a table with pillows and a sheet to make sure they are comfortable.
Laser hair removal treatments, depending upon a person’s pain tolerance, can feel like a gentle pinch or the snap of a hot rubber band. Treatments should be done every four, six or eight weeks depending upon the area of the body to ensure hair follicles will be lasered at the optimal point in the growth cycle. Once those hair follicles are destroyed, hair does not grow back, and a person can enjoy having smooth and permanent hair-free skin.
